Looks like they were thinking of putting a bar on the front like the French Schneider.

There are a few much clearer photos in the snappily titled book Komitee Nachbau Sturmpanzerwagen A7V. Vom Urpanzer zum Kampfpanzer Leopard 2. Ein Beitrag zur Militär- und Technikgeschichte. Erweiterte Neuauflage. [Wehrtechnik und wissenschaftliche Waffenkunde. Band 15.]. It's not a single bar but two bars in parallel, tied together with cross-girders, each fitted to the hull just inside the tracks. The vehicle is a full A7V chassis with a wood body, so it's a semi-mockup.
