Even today different Constabularies have different badges on the helmets, which themselves could vary in design, albeit slightly. In my memory (60s) the police in some places wore white helmets for some duties, I assume for visibility, but perhaps there are ex-policemen on the forum.

The British Police is and always was organised into different constabularies or police forces. Different constabularies have different uniforms though the differences are matters of detail such as cap badges and buttons. There may be a Police museum and if so they should be able to help. There is also a well known photo of a presentation tank in Kent with a policeman standing next to it that you could use as a model for the Kent constabulary. Sorry can't post it just now.

James, John and Gwyn: thanks for the replies. Much appreciated!
As far as I can see from pictures this 1:35 policeman (sold as a ww2 figure) will fit in my planned diorama of the Mark IV Joy Ride in Southend on Sea. I found this picture of a policeuniform on the web rom just after the great war.
