Germany's oldest WW1 veteran died

Dear all, this is my first post, so bare with me. I've been a keen visitor of Landships for years, and with the news of today I thought I'd start a thread, even if somewhat out of topic.

Robert Meier, Germany's oldest man and one of the last WW1 veterans, died yesterday. He was one of the very few infantry veterans of WW1 still alive. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Meier.

Wikipedia lists 6 remaining verified German WW1 veterans, and 35 from other countries.

Maybe it is of interest to some that there are still veterans alive who have lived what we are reading about and modelling. Regards, Pat

Thanks for posting this. I know that me and many others are really keen to know this, as the last of the old soldiers are passing away now, and none of us would like this to go un-noticed.

 I welcome all postings regarding old WW1-veterans.

whoa its interesting to know these things.
Its amazing that  he survived two wars where millions of other Germans, soldiers and civilians alike perished. I wonder what theatre he served in WW2.
I thought that there were no original ANZACs left but i guess you learn something new every day. Must have been no more kiwis left from WW1 and that aussie guy is the last one.

Vincent, Robert Meier apparently served on the Eastern front in WW2, because he spend some time as prisoner of war in the Caucasus.

Not to bang my own drum but on Wikipedia there is a debate to delete the German article on him - not because of any quality issues with the text but because some say the man was not relevant enough to deserve an article on Wikipedia.  However so far the majority of participants in the discussion want to keep the article. Apparently there is no such debate on the English Wikipedia. Regards, Pat
