FANYs were permitted to within 500 yards of the British front line trench which often meant that they got as far as the reserve and support trenches. Certainly well within the zone subject to artillery fire and within reach of some small arms fire. Unofficially some got as far as the front line first aid dug outs. I've found some photos of FANY's at the front wearing 'tin helmets'. I'll post this week end.
