Dutch Uniforms
Permalink

While looking into the question of Belgian uniforms, I wondered if there was any similarity to their neighbours', the Dutch. Info has been very hard to come by, but these are pics, from the New York Times Midweek Pictorial, of Dutch troops being reviewed. Pics published Jan 1917.

I thought the Dutch might have been influenced by the Belgians or possibly the Germans, but this looks almost Austrian or even Polish. Got no details of colour, date of issue, or anything more.

Hello James !

It doesn't yet fit to Dutch uniforms -but you reminded me at a restored movie
about marching british troops you have told some months ago .
I saw this restored film some weeks ago at YOU-Tube . Forgot to point it up at once.

Best regards -Gerd

I've managed to find a couple more pics. It looks as if the Dutch did something similar to the Belgians; pre- or early-War uniforms seem to have been quite elaborate, with busbies and so on, whereas later pics show a drab uniform with puttees. I believe the WWII Dutch uniform was blue-grey, but I can't find any details for the Great War.

Pics show: Artillery, pigeon troops, mixed uniforms.

Gerd - I assume you're referring to the enhanced version of The Battle of the Somme. I can't find it on Youtube. Have you got a link?  J

That's excellent. Thanks, Al.

This link's a bit easier to fit into the box thingy:

http://home-2.tiscali.nl/~stefanwi/101tkbat/library/7-uniformen.htm

These are Hussars, the first 2 pe-1914 and the last 1914+, so it seems they did modernise the uniforms like the Belgians but retained, at least in principle, the busby. Officially the Belgian Guides retained theirs, but in practice the men abandoned it in favour of the sidecap (bonnet de police).

These illustrations tie in with the previous pics.

Sorry it took a little while, but I found a clear picture of Dutch infantry during the mobilisation of 1914 in my hometown IJmuiden. As you see, the uniforms are black. Later during the Great War, the color of the uniforms was changed to field grey although the appearance was similar and slightly simplified.

Michel.

Very interesting, Michael. Are the uniforms definitely black? Dark blue would seem more likely. There seem to be some similarities with Belgians here. The man on the right with the bicycle has a shako very like the Belgian pattern and the kepis are also Belgian-style. They also appear to have worn a bonnet de police.

I believe their biggest job was rounding up British, Belgian, and German troops who had strayed or fled into Holland.

Ah. Here's a site on reenactors 1900-1940, including some WWI. Unfortunately they've chosen to post pics in black and white, which is frustrating.
