I am trying to find out if gas and smoke shells where deployed to 18ld's that were deployed in the forward areas of British positions in 1918. I know these guns were positioned in ones and twos primarily as anti-tank guns but I have not yet found out what the breakdown of rounds supplied in the limbers for these guns. I would be grateful for any information.
Interesting, i'd never heard about 18 pounders being near the front as anti tank guns - have you got any references for this? Not that I doubt you at all, just interested to find out more!
If you look at Martin Middlebrook's book "The Kaiser's Battle" there is a diagram on page 76 which illustrates the concept of a British Divisions defence in depth. Single guns are shown in the forward position, with artillery batteries deployed in the ground between the Forward and Battle zones. In the last paragraph on page 75 he states: " A proportion of the 18ld field guns were detached from their batteries and sited well forward in concealed positions just behind the front line, to stay silent there until called upon to act as anti-tank guns in the event of a German attack." He goes on to describe how the crews of these guns regarded themselves as expendable.
