German howitzer - Melbourne

German "War Trophy" 150mm howitzer no.: 548 captured on 18 Sep 1918 by A Corps AIF. Located in Darling Gardens,Clifton Hill, Melbourne.



I don't have the expertise to answer your question but does this extra photo help - it looks as if something has been "spliced" into the casing (or whatever it is) under the barrel. Has the barrel been lengthened and if so does this answer your query?



Another question is "What is this device - what does it do?

Sandy, a quick question about the barrel on the 15cm Fh you have so kindly photgraphed & posted?

Just in front of the gun shield is what looks like a broad barrel band? OR is this the a change in dimension of the Gun Tubes outer section? It is not clear from this photo nore any drawing I have seen? This makes a big difference if I try to do a conversion to get this piece.

More generally can anyone direct me to some drawings with dimensions or scales on them to help me get the overall sizing right.

Sandy, re your device question, at a guess is it connected to the wheel brakes (in front of the gun shield)  these would need some device to apply, tighten / lock them?

Re my query, If you look at the third down of your original photos you will see the the band I am interested in (it has a ding / damage on its forward lip). I can't tell if this just a band over the barrel or actually continues back to the breech making it an outer tube for the barrel?

Re your photo of the spliced bit, looking at that photo I wonder if the piece had been damaged & rebarrelled as a repair for continued service - as there looks to be a liner fitted under the forward retention ring?

Attached is an image of the Mt Morgan sFH 13 - this gun has damage to the muzzle end of the barrel and the barrel has slid back onto the carriage because the recuperator is also damaged/missing. However you can clearly see the rear section of the barrel without the gun shield getting in the way.
