Panzer Badge

I was doing some research for a friend on Col-Gen Hoth and was surprised to see that he had been awarded the panzer badge in WWI.
Does anybody have any info on the award and the criteria for its award during WWI?

This tank badge? The badge was made in 1921 and it was given to those, who have been served in tanks during WW I.

Tank service in the front was needed for having this. A7V or Beutepanzer.

Mikka,
Thanks for the info - anybody know the number of badges awarded?  Can't have been that many.

Officially only 99, but I have some kind of evidence that there were more.

Christoph,
Thanks for the info - a very rare award, especially as Hoth was a Captain in 1914, so presumably would have been consierably higher by 1917.
