RR AC Project

DSC02557.JPGDSC02558.JPGDSC02559.JPGThis will be an off topic post, I do sheetmetal and weld wire sculpture/impressions, not scale models.

Lincoln Tanker has seen my other projects and thought it would be interesting to watch this on being built.

This is the begining of a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost armored car, I use 18Ga. cold rolled steel and various diameters of weld wire and round stock. Tig welded together, I try to hide as many welds as I can get away with.

Any way, this is the first page of what will be a long book.

DSC02560.JPGDSC02561.JPGDSC02562.JPGThe Silver Ghost's had massiv torque tubes and axle housings and that would be a lathe job, I dont have a lathe, so I'm using 1/4" round stock.

With the armor skirt around the petrol tank and the running boards carrying un-ditching troughs and other "stuff" you will never see them.

316.jpgA little back ground I'm a history buff and a halfway clever fabricator. I was looking at retirement and wanted to do something interesting that I would be able to sell. For my first project I wanted to do a 1914 RR AC, at that time there was very little info on the internet, just some old photos.

So With just a little info I started the RR project, I got a lot of things wrong and when it was done I realized I had to be a lot more accurate to generate interest. This is my very first project. The one I just started is a lot bigger, 24" long, with a lot more detail and the proper shape.

DSC02566.JPGDSC02568.JPGAnother page, did I tell you these project take forever. The hardest part is cleaning the weld discoloration and filing and sanding as you go

month or so ago I had shoulder surgery, two weeks after that I came down with an infection which required a second surgery.

The bits you see here I did right before surgery, as you can see by the dust. I have another couple weeks before I can start again.

Fantastic model - if you made it in that detail in full size 1:1 it would be a great replica!

DSC02574.JPGDSC02577.JPGWell I'm up and running again, sort of. I am spending time in the shop and have made some progress.

There will be a lot of work with Scotch Brite to even out the finish, the simulated rivets are drops of .035 weld wire.

Still looking fantastic! It will be almost a shame when you have to paint it, the bare metal looks superb.

Thanks Roger,

I dont paint my projects, I use the weld discoloration as highlites. I do try to remove most of it, then paint on a coat of wax which I melt in with a heat gun.

This gives a look like 15th century armor in a museum.
