1/72nd Kielkraft Traction Engine
Permalink

Sorry, no painted images yet... I'm still trying to re grow my eyes after getting this far,confuse.gif 1/72nd isn't my normal scale, but I couldnt pass up this little beauty at a swap meet recently, I figured after scratch building one in 1/35th that this would be easy no.gif... I wont be making that mistake again... As soon as I slap a coat of paint on it I'll update this post with some fresh images. Let me know what you think... It's a fairly old kit that I did quite a few modifications on to to get to what you see now.

Any comments are most welcome (there's still time for me to fix my errors !)

Regards,

David Scorer

I love it! Great work!
I see where you made most of the modifications... quite a chore! Please send us more in-progress pictures. Have you used the original smoke stack? Check one of the spokes on the front wheel, it's broken!... One of the disadvantages of other Keilkraft kits is the almost complete absence of "cockpit" details. Is this the case as well? I'm still looking for suitable examples of the driving area of the Shoman's engine and the steam roller.

That's coming along really nicely, David! If you want to go mad and really strain your eyes, check out this German modeller's build of that kit:

That's a really good model David! I'm just struggling with the same kit myself with its rather inadequate instructions that expect you to be able to see the side that isn't shown in the drawing!

Mine will be for wargames purposes so not as detailed as yours. I'm going to investigate possible crew from model railway sources. Hopefully the finished article will feature in our game at SELWG (Crystal Palace) on 16 October.

Cheers

Paul B

Update! I have now finished putting the kit together (no photos yet though!) but sadly it looks way over scale to me. I know these things were/are big (I have actually driven one at a country fair and my brother in law has a licence to drive them!) but next to almost anything else it towers over it. For example it dwarfs the Emhar A7V and Mark IV, and a standing 1/72 man (even one of the "tall" 1/72 men) is quite a bit smaller than the main wheel. I have lots of other Keil Kraft kits and they are certainly 1/72 scale so I'm a bit puzzled.

Anybody got any comments about scale? I don't think I'll be using it in a 1/72 game (shame as I've been after one of these for years!) but maybe in 28mm it will look ok? What do others think?

Paul,

First of all congratulations on your excellent work!!

Regards the size of the model, although my knowledge of traction engines is not very extensive, i have attended quite a few steam rallies, and my memory dictates that some, particularly showmans engines such as your kit originated from are huge!!

I have attached a photo taken from a google search which hopefully demonstrates.

Hope this helps put your mind at rest.

Best regards,

Sam

I think this should give a good idea of scale.

where ever can you find keilkraft models? (Good base for that delousing wagen I've got in mind.) along with oh say THE REST OF THE ARMY CORPS I HAVE YET TO FINISH PURCHASING FOR ASSEMBLING BUILDING AND PAINTING!!! One thing for sure, If I could go back in time and display my models and miniatures to the Kaiser, he'd be impressed.

Greetings, Josh

G'day Paul...

I'm not sure if your having a go at me or not... but I did get a laugh.... the image of the model you posted is a scratchbuilt model I built a few years ago, 2007 actually.  It's 1/35th scale, I took it as carry on luggage all the way from Australia to the UK, it arrived unhurt and I was lucky enough for it to place with a Bronze at EuroMilitaire and a Gold at a MAFVA comp whilst I was over there.

Still, It was good to see an image of it posted, gave me a good laugh...

Regards,

David

G'day Josh,

I picked this particular model up at a swap meet, along with a KielKraft B type bus, I paid $20Australian for the pair, since then I've also picked up another built one and a partially built one. There out there if you keep your eyes open, I must admit tho, I didn't fancy paying the high costs that I've seen them go for on evilbay...

Regards

David

G'day again Paul.

I went trolling through a few old image folders and managed to find the only two unpainted images I took of the 1/35th version that you so kindly posted previously ... thought they might make a passable addition to this thread. biggrin

Regards,

David Scorer

Hiya Gents,

I thought that I had done a lot of work on my Fowler, but after seeing the model in the link that Roger posted, my work pales into insignificance... smile

Langley Miniature models do a whitemetal kit in 1:76 scale.

Beware very expensive.

Hi Baldwin,

At almost 50 pounds it is a bit too expensive to my taste. The detail of that kit doesn't seem to be much better than of the old Keilkraft kit...

With kind regards,

-Arie.
