WIP Big Bertha-1:72 drawing
Permalink

After I saw the good work done on the Mark I tanks. I thought I could do something simular. But because I live in the Netherlands and I am a student I don't have the oppertunities to get an measure or get some good refference books.

But then I came acros the model on this side of the Big Bertha. And it is the only model but far from perfect. So I dicided to make my own. And searched for references.

There isn't any proper drawing, so I just toke Ken Musgrave drawings as base reference and some mates mentiond in text (barrel diameter and length.) And started modelling.

In the files below you can see how far I am. But I'm a little stuck. I want to know how the axles goes below the gun breech. And were te breech is raised.

So maybe if someone have some good refferences of it.

The final goal for me is to make a fully 3d model in scale 1:72. And let it print to have a model from it. If it is a succes I will make the model available at Shapeway, so that everyone can order it. Also I will make this drawing available here. (only the drawing, not the model).

there are some little notes. because of the printing technic I can't use shape's smaller than 0,1mm for details. That's pretty small and good enough for a  1:72 scale model. But on the other hand it means that I make the details on the 3d model in the same measurment, so it wil not be totally correct. But it's more important that it looks right and it is as close as it can get.

I don't own a book covering this gun. If some know there is a book that I must have, please let me know. But I don't buy every book available because i don't have the money.

So everyone who want to have some advice measurement. can print pdf at full scale and sketch the dimmensions in it. Or if i have to remodel something. than I can change it. But let me know. I am trying to make the best model available of this gun. at the lowest cost posible.

But it keeps an voluntairy job, so I don't give an end date.

Hopefully I will get some responce, and some advice or measurements.

Good luck,

With regards,

Gerard-Jan

PS, I'm not very good in English so don't mention my faults, I think it is good enough that you will understand it.

Today I have worked another couple of hours and with tanks to some photo's whick Marc sended to me, and I now know the wheel diameter, I had to redo some things. Because the dimension where not right.

The wheel is a nice base to work with. and it does look like the real one.

Next step will be to detail the side and rest of chasic.

the gun cradle I will do later, because I have to totally redo this part.

with regards,

GJ
