WW1 POWs movie
Permalink

hi guys,

trying to identify a movie made in the 1920's or '30s about WW1 POWs held in a Castle -- very similar story to "Colditz" but no-one got out (hero was shot just outside the castle wall).  The prisoners were a mix of all nationalities -- brit, Canadian, French Belgian.  I'm sure David Niven was in it but I may be wrong.  The castle Kommandant was played by a famous German actor & in the film he grew a single rose? on the window-sill.

Any help ?

thanks Ray

Sounds like 'La grande Illusion' by Jean Renoir. It has Erich von Stroheim as the German captain

thanks cdr,
the title doesn't ring a bell but I don't think I ever caught the beginning of the film - just came across it a few times on our ethnic channel while surfing. Guess it was also sold with a different title in different countries which seems to happen a lot.

Some nice Landsturm shakos, as well.
