It's also worth noting the EU-funded 'Europeana 1914-1918' site (available in 5 languages) which is collecting WW1 family history stuff (pictures, letters, anecdotes etc). Apologies if it's been mentioned here before; I did check but located no reference to it.

A quick search suggests there are some rich pickings there.
