Hell fire. I have seen an article all about water effects. It had everything from fast-flowing rivers to stagnant shell-holes (which did involve mixing clear resin with some colouring). I cannot for the life of me remember where I saw it. Sorry. I shall rack my brains and hope to wake up in the middle of the night with the answer.

Hi,
It depends on the depth and size, but you could use clear resin or one of the water effect products used by the railway pepole!

Model railroad guys make model water all the time. Woodland Scenics makes some and so do many other companies. Your local model railroad shop will have the products and technical know how and local train clubs who will give advice too.

How about eBob's method, explained towards the bottom of this thread - plaster of paris with paint and varnish on top; there are photos of his dio to show the result.

Most railway modellers products are aimed at producing clear, bright water. I would suggest for shellholes you need something muddy looking so I would think any suitable material finished with a gloss varnish would be the best bet.
