So, you've been? I'd be interested to know which sites you explored. I have a trip itinerary all set, but have so far found nothing in the way of historical accounts of what happened in the Vosges, so have no context beyond which were the French and German lines. Any advice much appreciated (my French isn't up to reading "real" books). Would love to go and spend a Western Front visit in walking boots...
Not been, just found these lurking on t'interweb! http://tim-slater.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/battle-for-hartmannswillerkopf-february.html provides a readable account of the fighting.
Ah, Hartmannsweilerkopf... that's more or less hometurf. I live about 40 kms away from there (in Germany though), and it is one of my destinations when I go out for a shortish scooter tour into the Vosges. I have been there many times.
A view to die for... literally. A very serene and atmospheric place.
Best regards,
Martin
