Not to start a debate on paint shades, but I was wondering if I could get some idea on what MK II tanks were painted in?
I am at the stage when I am about to start painting my MK II Male, and am wanting to know more about the painting methodology of the time.
Were they released in a single shade colour, and/or did they get a camo scheme? And if they had a camo scheme, what (approximate) colours and patterns were used in British/Commonwealth service?
Thanks in advance
Rob

Hi Rob, Mk IIs were khaki. Some had Solomon camo on the sponsons, because some were fitted with sponsons removed from Mk Is already painted in that scheme. Whether your sponsons should be camo'd depends which particular tank it is, but hull will be khaki regardless.

Fantastic. Thank you muchly :) I will have to decide which tank I am going to make it, and go from there.
This leads to another question.. are there any confirmed sightings of a MK II Male with camo sponsons? I have come across some pics of 799 / D26 may have a camo sponson.. but the pics are not clear enough to confirm this.
Has anyone else come across a MK II Male with camo painted sponsons?
Rob, I've seen photos of nine of the 25 MkII males. None have shown any evidence of camouflage on the sponsons, unlike the female MkII sponsons where the camouflage is fairly obvious. Tank 799 was burnt out during the action at First Bullecourt, and this may account for the appearance of camouflage

Ahh.. that would explain it. Thanks for the information and the picture. This has made painting easier as I won't need to try and mask off the hull while painting the sponsons.
Sorry to say my memory let me down again... it was a MK3. I was right about the MK1 male sponson with camo, and it being at Bovi, so only failing memory not completely gone. :)

Hi Helen
Thanks for taking the time to look for this for me :) I will go with the dark khaki then.
