Sorry for starting a new thread on this but it has been quite sometime since I posted the in progress photos. After a month or so of detailing the Bull Models 6" howitzer it is finally painted. I hope you like it. Not sure why the background changed color between shots.
Yes, one eventually has to cover it with a paint scheme, and surround it with a nice base. Eventually, a casual observer would glance at it in a modelling show and say "oh yes, that's the Wotitsname limited run kit, a quite dreadful thing, I traded mine for a Tamigawa PE set".
I know what you mean. I have recently purchased the new Resicast 1/35th scale 6"howitzer. Resicast will be releasing the limber and a Holt Tractor later this year so I am psyched to make the larger sized howitzer = even after all the work I put into the smaller version.
Very nice! (especially the Holt!) Oddly, when I see a good model of an artillery piece, I can't help but think that the best models are even capable of actually shooting small rounds of ammo. While I'm more used to airplane , ship and vehicle models, where the miniaturization comes also with the realization of their inherent static quality; canons have the advantage of looking capable of function even being in small scales. How cool would be to have a 155mm cannon ready to blow up your average show competitor off the table? D.
Very nice, hope they make a suitable artillery piece for the Holt, as far as i'm aware 6 inches were only ever towed by horses or the FWD Model B 3 ton 4x4 lorry
Here is a picture I have found in Ian Hogg's book on WWI Allied Artillery. It shows the Holt towing the 6' howitzer and limber in Palestine. I am sure resources were limited in this theater necessitating using what was available. However, it seems that if they used the Holt here they could have used it on the Western Front to tow this piece.
It does look as if the photographer has captured an image of a howitzer almost pulling a Holt backwards. Is the Holt's wheel being lifted? Is this part of a sequence demonstrating success or failure?
In the retreat of 1918, it does not seem too improbable that Holts and other equipment may have been used to try to salvage artillery. As ever, contemporary sources would be preferable. Any photographs?
Ah, true, i'd forgotten about that photo of the Holt pulling one in Palestine - not surprising, i've seen a 60 pdr being towed by one in the middle east too. Surprisingly on the western front i've only ever seen 60 pdrs towed by horses.
I think the Holt's wheel is in the air as it's just going over a ridge and hasn't reached tipping point, just yet anyway! I think Holt's were used for tasks they weren't used for elsewhere in the theatre owing to the difficulties of transportation, such as the big tracked trailers for general transport - i'm currently reading an account of an 18 pounder gunner who describes using two, three or even four times the normal amount of horses to tow an 18 pounder plus limber in the desert
