Technically eight - one to fire, one to load - both of these also had a pistol, so not the usual webbing set (no bayonet, and pistol case on the left hand side and small leather ammunition pouch on right hand side in lieu of the ammunition pouches), about 2-4 men to carry ammunition in metal boxes or canvas buckets, or from very late 1917 circular webbing pouches, and the rest with rifles to provide covering fire. In 1916 they were issued with a small, hand drawn cart to move the Lewis guns and ammunition etc which was often seen in photos of men on the move.
