i had a grandfather who fought with pershing in the mexican border expedition (1916) and then went to england and france in the 301st heavy tank battalion, 27th division, american II corps. is there a place where i can find records of his service?
Eric,
What's your grandfather's name? I can check my rosters of the 301st, though they are spotty, at best.
FYI, the 301st was not part of the U.S. 27th Division, though many period sources make it sound that way. It was, in fact, part of the British 4th Tank Brigade. During the advance on the Hindenburg line on September 29, 1918, the 301st supported the mission of the 27th Division, leading the infantrymen into the fray. The commander of the 301st worked closely with the command structure of the 27th, but they still were operating as a battalion under British direction.
I am wanting to know what tank my great uncle was in on the September 29th attack. He was killed in action that night. His name was Corporal Leo Rauf and he was a member of Company C - 301st Tank Battalion.
Hello Eric, my grandfather was Major Joseph John Gutkowski, US Army. He also served in the Mexican border expedition (The Punitive Expedition) and the 301st Tank Battalion. Perhaps they knew each other. Small world.
