Making decals
Permalink

Happy new year to everyone.

I am considering getting some white decal sheeting and attempting to make some decals. The objective is to give some of my models a personnel touch.

Has any one out there attempted this and was it worth the effort?

Hi there RCD,
I have made decals for one of my 2 Masterbox Mk1's. I have also made decals for a number of other vehicles (non Great War). I have used both the clear and the white decal paper and printed the decals using a Xerox laser printer. I master the decals in CorelDraw. The challenge is with the white decal sheet - inevitably you have to try and match the 'background' colour printed with the colour of paint used on the model, it was a pain as "Oh, I SAY!!!" crossed 3 colours on one side.
Rather than go through every thing, please feel free to PM me with any specific questions, or post here.

Has anyone tried painting the area under white lettering white before using the decals?  Alternatively, white paint under clear decal letters.  When I want to make decals for vehicles, I find it easier to spray paint cardboard with the desired vehicle color, then scanning the color into my computer so it can be used for the decal base color.  Pls keep this discussion going . . .

I have tried the method suggested by Al and, within reason, it does help. However, I now create a range of, say, greens making a note of the RGB values. One problem with a laser printer is that in small scales the colour appears as dots so a bit of weathering is essential.
The option of painting white and using the clear decal sheet is something I am considering for an aircraft project. This is because I have found that the edges of the white decal sheet can so appear when trimmed.

Look at the thread on Building Oh I Say. The decals on the latter photos are made from the white decal sheet with coloured background of grey, black, green.

I found in Italy at least two decals printing server which print white and colored decals.

They print even only one sheet on on different format (usually from A5 to A3)

First of all I have non connection with the seller, I am only a modeller looking for a better choice (*)

Fides Grafica from Verona (Italy) - No English site but I think Google translator can help you.

http://www.fides-grafica.it/prodotti/decalcomanie

Price and format

http://www.fides-grafica.it/vetrina/decalcomanie

Max-model Decals from Florence (Italy)

Max Model Home Page

Their "how to make customize decals" page

http://www.max-model.it/ecommerce/decalpersonalizzate.php

Usually they work with lots of file type as high resolution JPG, PDF, vectorial file from Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw.

For example I am working on a A5 sheet i will print at Fides Grafica ad a vectorial file

In the screen print below you see decals for some subjet.

From up to bottom

- Supply Tank #4492

- Beute-Panzer Mk IV Female "MARIECHEN" - KoKampf #155, Abteilung 01, Germany 1920.

- St Chamond #62467 MIN P'TIT QUINQUIN - AS31

Maybe I will add decals for BLARNEY CASTLE but I am not sure because she needs a lot o work with the so-called free forms.

All magenta object will print in white, the others in the same color I draw them (MARIECHEN in red)

Note this server requires only two layer: one for white and the other for colored items (I add a Template layer for reference but I will delete it before printing).

You seen several copies of the some dacals because it is the first time I work with this company so I want some decals to make trial on scrapped model.

Note also you pay for the sheet indipendently from how many decals you have.

The working area

and a bigger view of decals

Regards,

Pierantonio

(*) I really can't understand why I have to specify I have non connection with the seller on American and British forum. In Italy this doesn't matter but I think in other countries may be some legal problem. Anyboby can explain me the reason of that?

this is the first print of my home made decals ( levels enhanced to show white)

From top to bottom

- Supply Tank #4492

- Beute-Panzer Mk IV Female "MARIECHEN" - KoKampf #155, Abteilung 01, Germany 1920.

- St Chamond #62467 MIN P'TIT QUINQUIN - AS31

and then some other decals for some members of my local model association

Most important: you get white decals on transparent sheet

Well gentlemen, the clumsiness of using white decal paper and printing color around the white letters prompted me some years ago to start Black Lion Decals. If you check out my website, you'll see I also do decal printing on demand at affordable prices, specially when you provide the artwork yourselve from CorelDraw. I have been using an Alps printer, but have recently switched to a new Oki laser printer, capable of printing white markings on a transparant decal film. Looking forward to be of service!

all the best,

Michel Boer
