French artillery covers

Here's an arcane question that perhaps someone might have an answer: On French cannons, there were covers for the muzzles and the sight supports, even the breechs. Anyone knows which colour and material woud be these covers?

Dang, I've painted them already with a sort of greyish khaki. How far can it be from the real thing?

Sounds reasonable. I'd guess the covers were grey - French artillery before the war was painted a neutral grey colour known (unsurprisingly) as "gris artillerie".

Regards,

Charlie

Yes, too true. Alas, "Gris artillerie" is much closer to light blue than to black+white paint.

That shade is quite similar to the German pre-war color applied to their artillerie.
