mk I female MG

Building and really enjoying Takom's Mk I female, which in my opinion is an excellent kit, i've noticed an oddity regarding the MG armour covers and I haven't been successful in finding any pics or info so I try this great forum.

For some reason Takom have moulded the MG covers hollow on the underside with no inserts or anything. What would it look like in real life? Would there be a flat covering plate on the underside or would the lower part of the watercooling mantlet be visible?

Regards

/Mats

Hi Mats,

Machine Guns are not something I know a great deal about, but after looking at some photos I have, I would say the MG's Jacket breaks down into three parts. In one photo of a wrecked Female Tank it shows the front of the Jacket missing. That part looks like it is bolted on. The top and bottom of the jacket look like they're riveted together.

Hopefully someone will come along and enlighten us both.

Helen x

Hi Helen and thousand thanks for your reply. The pics you attached actually answered my question perfectly. There is a bottom plate attached to the armorcover protecting the watercooling mantlet of the mg from schrapnels and gunfire. Damage to the watercooling system would quickly make the mg overheat while firing, hence the armorcover. To finalize my build I only need to add a strip of thin styrene as a bottomplate on each mg, which is so mucher easier than reproducing the mantlet of the Vickers mg. Very peculiar that Takom choosed to leave it as a open hole easily seen. Mats
