MOTHER & HER CHILDREN – THE Mk.I TANK IN ALL ITS GUISES

Good afternoon all. 

Have spent the last few weeks completing the first part of a long term project that I'd been thinking about for some time - the modeling of the MkI in all her guises, in paper, at 1/48.

Using Wayne's original model (which in turn is based on Helen's amazing plans) I started with a redraw and conversion to HMLS Centipede - 'Mother'.  This has been followed by another five. 

I've used a little artistic licence on some particularly on the Mk.I Male Dinnaken which probably never had the name on the side, only the number, and didn't have a grenade canopy) and on the totally fictional Mk.I Repair and Recovery 'Ole Sal'. 

I noticed after taking the photos that I had spelt Gaza with two Z's (like the reknowned footballer rather than the an area of Palestine!)

The original post is over on the papermodelers forum (where there is far more information about each model).

'Mother' is now available to download here on Landships.

As Grant said, what a great collection of tanks. I don't think I'd have the patience for paper modelling... I know I'd end up all gluey fingered and I'd also like to see more pics.

Has anyone else noticed "new and improved" seems to mean it doesn't work as well as it used to?

Lovin these Shawn, all look brill really really like what you have done with these as above would love to see more pic's, build pic's & to be really cheeky ref pic's as I would love to make a couple of these in 1/35 someday.

Thanks for all your kind comments guys - it really does encourage me to build more!

 

Anyway, as promised, I'll post more photos of each build.  Unfortunately there are no build photo's - though, if anyone particularly wants to see a build thread of one of Wayne's models then just let me know and I'll happily start one. 

 

On with the photos - here's Mother and Dinnaken....

 

I've used some artistic licence with 'Dinnaken' - there is no photographic evidence of her ever having the name painted on the side (only the number D17), nor is there and evidence of an anti-grenade canopy having been fitted..

MkI female and MkI supply will follow in the next post..

Here's the photo's of the Female - HMLS Tiger, with jib attached (erroneously called the Gaza jib modification on a number of available plastic model kits).  Used by all early tanks, before the introduction of the later sponson which could be slid inside the hull, the jib was used to remove the sponsons for rail travel etc.  (The photos show my original title plaque, where I had mistakenly spelt Gaza with two Z's!)

 

Next is the supply version - probably the most enjoyable to build (because of all the additional bits and pieces!)

Finally, a totally fictional tank - an old Mk.I which had already seen a second life as a training tank (the training number '54' can still just be seen).  She had then had her sponsons removed and almost all the other hatches had been removed (probably to repair other vehicles), and was being used as a repair and recovery vehicle at the Tank Depot, Wareham during the spring of 1918...

 

There's a MkII male and MkIII female on the cutting mat right now!
