Apart from that, though, is what looks like a fascine on top of a tank behind him. Is it new? Wnat tank is it on? Is it real or fake? Anyone know anything?

Ooo, that's a new addition, wasn't there when I was last there for Tankfest 2015. It's on the Mk IV... Which doesn't have unditching rails (the one from HMS Excellent in WW2). Someone from the museum did tell me last year that a few of the tanks were to be cosmetically smartened up for the centenary so assume it's part of that
Ah, here we are. Another recent addition. By the sound of things, a permanent one. I wonder if it's authentic - weight, release gear, etc.

It obviously misses the bent profiles to hold the fascine in place in front of the turret (in contrary, as mounted, it rests too far behind). The complete attachment and release mechanism (hooks and cables) is lacking, too. But I am glad they seem not to have altered the substance of the tank. Everything to make the fascine assembly more accurate would have meant to remove rivets.
I wonder why they didn't put it on the replica instead?
Which is a good thing, in my opinion. I never understood why museum vehicles tend to be presented in markings and versions which they never had in their service life.
Did the fascine get an outing at Tankfest? There does seem to be something holding it in place - just plonking it wouldn't be very stable. Full report from Rob required.
