Came across a mention of this early German prototype, apparently tested in 1916 & 17 and based on "parallel revolving vats." The Steilwagen seems to have been something similar, but no further info. Does this mean anything to anyone?

Sorry, I have to posted in so long, my log in information does not work... This is Tim R (WW1NUT) I have researched both of these vehicles for years, may I ask where you ran across this information..I was planning an article on these rare vehicles put alas work and my health got in the way, and of course with the absence of Peter my drive for producing articles diminished... If you are interested I will look up my information and I can share it with you privately.
Hello James, I tried to post a comment anonymously yesterday only because I could not get logged in. Anyway I had planned an article on early German Tank design before Peter's in activity "shall we say", and my health issues and of course the inevitable job!!! I have researched many vehicles that are practically unknown, The Zechlin und Steil vehicles are just being a few. If interested I can look back through my research and send you some information privately. I also have some drawings of there walking vehicle (tank Design) as well.

Strangely, Steilwagen seems to be quite a popular surname. A bit of googling turns up plenty.

Hello James, I have not located all of the Information yet, but I have located some drawings I was working on back in 2006. They represent the Z-1 design which was a articulated design, its general purpose was to be designed into a heavy hauling tractor, the drawing represents the correct lower aspect from the original plans, and my interpretation of the amour as described by Mr. Zechlin, this of course was never designed only on paper.... The Z-2 was specifically designed as a tank, of course it was not articulated, this also never got off of the drawing board. (the drawing represents the correct lower aspect from the original plans, and my interpretation of the amour as described by Mr. Zechlin also) A prototype of the walking stalking skid system was produced but no other activity is known or at least I can not find it.... Multiple other things were designed by Zechlin, there is in existence a photo of his rear walking system for a heavy truck, and I have no idea as to where I put it. I do have the patients on all of his inventions if you are interested, I have painstakingly translated them as well. I am completely confused as to the existence of the Steilwagen.I have not uncovered anything regarding it. As far as I no Mr. Steil was a working partner of Mr. Zechlin, there vehicle design was called the Zechlin und Steil Stalking Skid System.......
I will continue to dig through my archive as such, and I will send you a comprehensive explanation of the workings for each design including dates and side notes.
It seems Herr von Bechtolsheim had several patents. He had a milking machine, then conveyor belt improvements, and then roller improvements. I think the last two were what gave him the idea for his walking vehicle.
