Short barrel on Mk tank

Hi, I was sent this picture, and I was wondering if the short barrel in this sponson,

was just that the cannon wasn't pushed all the way through, or was it a different caliber gun ?

It's a Mark IV. The gun is at full recoil.

Usually the guns are moved at full recoil to avoid damages during transportation especially on railway when the sponsons aren't eclipsed into the hull.

Judging by cleanliness, lack of markings and what appears to be brackets ready for the unditching beam rail, and tarpaulins folded on roof, I'd say those Tanks are en route towards their units (or just arrived)

Wouldn't the unditching beams be fitted at Central Worshops rather that at Bn HQ?

I assume you mean the rails rather than the beams. The answer is no. When first fitted it was done by Battalion workshop companies and by the crews.
