These photos were taken to the Norfolk Tank Museum last week. The Museum owner Stephen is trying to find out more information on the tanks if possible. The tank numbers do not appear in the Landship List website. Do you know what factory this was? Stephen has given me permission to post these photos.
Since no one else seems to know, and as I've already told Stephen Machaye at the Norfolk Tank Museum, I'll tell you that this is the Coventry Ordnance Works at Scotstoun, Glasgow. The tank isn't 4332 - there never was a Mark IV of that number. It's 4552. Lovely pics, and thanks for posting.
Yes, I agree. The field was the Glasgow Tank Testing Station and was used to test tanks built by COW, William Beardmore and Mirrlees Watson. The tank that appears to be 4550 would have been the last Mark IV built by Beardmore. It's interesting to note that it doesn't have sponsons. The last 25 Mark IVs built by Beardmore were completed as Tenders. It must be awaiting its supply sponsons.
If this photo is contemporaneous to that of 4552, this is evidence that Beardmore had completed their order before COW really got under way. This fits with other evidence that COW was the last firm to complete its Mark IV order. The problem is, I can't think of a way to prove the photos are contemporaneous!
