It is my understanding these batteries were initially equipped with 4X 30 CWT 6 in howitzers, and it was these guns that went to France with them. This was an old, and quite ugly weapon system. Later modernization resulted in design improvements; box trail, etc.

The 30 cwt howitzer was quite an old gun having been introduced to service in 1896. The 30 cwt remained in service in declining

numbers during WW1 - there are images of German captured 30 cwt howitzers at Cambrai in late 1917.

Its successor - the 26 cwt was a completely new design and was in service in 1916. The 26 cwt gun remained in service into WW2.

Thanks for your quick responses. Could anyone point me of images of these guns in action or being hauled - I am writing a biography of Gunner Horace Searle and want to illustrate the difficulties of using these guns in WW1.

Can anyone advise how I might get permission to use the still image (pre-war?) at the top?

The image was taken pre-WW1 and any rights to it have long expired and its now in the public domain -

no permissions or attribution are required.
