French Heavy Artillery Sight and Sightmount
Permalink

I am trying to identify which French heavy guns used the "Gros Caliber"  sight/sightmount.  I have an example of it and it is listed in at least one French Artillery manual I have but they do not specify which guns it served. By the way the collimating top is missing. It is not correct for any 75mm, 105mm, 155mm that I know of in French service. Any ideas?

The diagram of this sight appears in the manual for the Mortier de 280 sur affût-chenilles (attached) - the Saint-Chamond SPG chassis with

Schneider 280mm howitzer - 25 of these were delivered in 1919.

I haven't found the corresponding manual page for the Schneider 280mm Howitzer but I'd guess the 280mm used the same sight.

I wonder if the US 240mm howitzer used this sight since those were licence built Schneider howitzers.

Regards,

Charlie

Did a bit more digging - the sight for the Schneider 280mm platform howitzer was different from the sight on the 280mm SPG. (manual page attached)

The sight on the Canon de 194mm GPF SPG was similar to that on the 280mm (manual page attached).

I guess the question is: what other heavy guns used this sight. The Schneider a glissement railway guns used a different sight (checked the manual).

I don't know about the 240mm coastal defence gun which was deployed on a Saint-Chamond platform. The Canon de 220 L Mle 1917 Schneider used a

different sight - very similar to that on the Mortier de 280mm.
