What style chassis on this American Ambulance
Permalink

Greetings,

At first glance, this stateside ambulance would appear to be a GMC. But, looking at the hood (bonnet), it clearly is not a GMC.  Can anyone help me identify what chassis was used for this ambulance?

Thank you,

Renault, I think.

I thought "Renault," as well.  This photo, though, was taken in the United States.  The louvres on the side of the hood (bonnet, eh?) appear to be different on most Renaults I have been able to compare with this image.

In that case, how about the International "Slope Hood"?

The shape of the radiator top between scuttle panel/bulkhead & hood seems more like a Renault than an IHC, to be honest.

And I've just read online that Renault was apparently "the best-selling foreign brand in New York in 1907 & 1908", so the company definitely had a presence in the US in the early 20th century.

The wheels are very similar to those seen on early war Renault armoured cars, too, so my money would be on a Renault.

Further to the above, I've just found this web-page, which has a photo that seems to show the same (or a very similar) ambulance, but from the other side - the caption claims it to be a Renault.

James and 11th Armoured. I am convinced! It is most likely a Renault. Thank you, so much for the sleuthing!
