I imagine the chains would have been crossed but attached to the outer corners of each sledge, as per the parallel chains. As you turn one goes slack; the chain from the outside (of the turn) rear corner of the front sledge to the inside front corner of the rear sledge remains tight, encouraging it to follow the turn in line. But I have no evidence that this was applied to the supply sledges, its just the logical, practical, method.
