Videos of the Boirault machines

Couple of videos I hadn't seen before on the Boirault No.1 and No.2 Barbed wire crushing devices.

The massive exposed drive chains on the No.1 device beside the drivers would give a modern occupational safety officer a coronary.

The No.2 device looks as if it was modified to tow a ramp. It could have been an attempt to create a bridge layer for tanks

to cross rivers. The St-Chamond tank didn't seem to have enough torque to climb the ramp though.

Absolutely crazy, really great! I think machine number 1 is relatively fast.

Yes, occupational safety inspectors would have a field day with these videos. I'm always amazed at how carelessly people approached these machines back then. There's even a video of the Char d'Essai FCM 1A, where children are running around.

Having a crowd of children around experimental vehicles seems to have been the norm in WW1 France. The video of the Renault SPG (FT with 75mm Mle 1897 gun) has a crowd of children around the vehicle before it gets to the firing range. Oddly the Renault SPG video isn't indexed on the CNRS website but the link from Landships II still works - http://landships/landships/tank_articles.html?load=/landships/tank_articles/Renault_SPGs.html.
