7.7cm Gun in Scotch Plains NJ
Permalink

The first 7.7cm Feldkanone 96 n.A. it sits on a small island in the middle of an intersection in the town of Scotch Plains, New Jersey, where it has been photographed by Mike Casale.

I grew up in Fanwood and graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High. Growing up, I was told this gun was presented to the town as part of a program where the Army distributed guns awarded to it as trophies after the end of the Great War to various communities in proporrtion to the amount of war bonds they had purchased

And this is a very interesting collection of photos, because this is, paradoxically enough, a rather rare gun. He says that "it's in pretty good shape, but sitting outside for many years is causing it to rust out in some places". The grey paint is evidently not the original one.

It is not, in the early to mid Sixties it was painted olive green. Then, in the late Sixties, the  "artistic" crowd at the High School volunteered to paint it as it was looking ratty. They came up with a gaudy jet back with silver trim job that resembled nothing so much as a float in a circus parade. I guess we should be thankful it wasn't pink with "psychedelic" flowers. I think I can remember it being in a pseudo-camouflage "splinter" camouflage scheme in the Eighties and was finally repainted in the Nineties with an attempt by the Department of Public Works to recreate a plausible Feldgrau scheme.

Thanks for the update on the Scotch Plains gun. Its featured again on a website I recently put out - www.doughboysofnyc.com    - When I sent those photos to landships 4 or 5 years ago one of the admins told me that they are pretty rare in Europe however there are a number of them in the US. I photographed another I found up in Cornwall NY, and put that on the site. This spring when I head to Long Island I know of another in Locust Valley NY. There is another in Groton CT which I will photo when I head up to Newport. There is also a 3rd one thats up in the Saratoga Springs NY musuem which will be posted on the doughboys site soon.
