Build a Mark IV
Permalink Closed

Ladies and Gentlemen,

my new project, building a Mark IV starts.
My english is mmmmhh so I want to talk to you through pictures.
If you see any failures dont be afraid to post.

I will build three of them in three different ways.
The first wil be made of poly and metal with rc function.
The second will be made in Resin.
The third will be made of FullMetal with rc function.

The scale of all will be 1:15 / 1:16.

If interest exists I post the whole building report in the next weeks / month.

Best Regards

Great idea and a lot of work to do!
Wouldn't you open the ventilation louvres on the rear both side? It would be better to built real louvres at this scale.

Her are the parts for the front:

Gilles, I think that you're thinking of the Mk V. The Mk IV didn't have the side louvres.

The Mark IV has only one louvres at the back side, beside the door.

Correct me if I am wrong.

That's correct. The exhaust pipe ends next to them.

Hi Ken,

thanks for your wishes and thanks for your help smile.

Now most of the parts for the pontons and the hull are made.

I will take a pause with drawing and milling to check the scale of the parts.
Till now check the width between the axles of the driving wheels. Its a deviation of 2mm to the original Mark IV. I think I am within the tolerance.

Yes you are right, I changed the parts for the pontons. Now it is much more easier to build the hull.

Best Regards

Oliver

Great work so far!
One more time about apertures (on MarkIV indeed), you should open the mud deflectors inside the rear "horns" just behind the upper return roller just as seen on this pic :

Hi Gilles,

you are absolutely right, I have never seen this opening on my pictures. Thanks a lot.
Now I need a photo of the entire inside to calculate the size of this opening. I haven´t found a picture where the whole side is seen.
Who can help and post or mail one.

Best Regards

Oliver

Today I received a picture from a model construction colleague.
Now I can change my drawings.

In the mean time I prepared the bottom of the hull for the gearbox and strengthened it with a metal plate.

Best Regards
Oliver

It's looking good Oliver.

Here's a link to a track topic, 1/15 scale drawings are there.

Hi Oliver,

that looks very promising, your project in progress!
It's a pity the first photos are lost somewhere, may be (bold question, I know) you could find the time and reposting them again?
If I am right: I see that you are using nails for the rivets, which interests me as I am doing the same on a project too, a MK1 1/10 scale. For economy reasons I choose the nails, as model rivets (and bolts too) are rather expensive. I think I will make the bolts out of hexagonal brass rods myself.
The problem is too find proper round headed nails. If they are too small or to flat the looks of the model are ruined. Yours look fine though!
After seeing many pictures, drawings etc. later on, I stopped the metal work and decided to make a model of card board first, the second will be plastic and when all things are correct the last one will be metal.
It looks similar to your approach I think!
In the near future I will post some pictures, and follow your revelations here with great interest!

regards, Kieffer

Hi,

unfortunately I have no permission to edit my own posts, so her are now some of the lost pictures.

In the beginning I thought about building this tank in super scale 1/16 , it is not possible.

Because of the growing weight I decided to make a skelett by aluminium. Because of this I have to broaden the tracks 2mm .

Regards
Oliver

Hi Oliver,

that's an interesting gearbox! Did you build that yourself?

regards, Kieffer

Hi,

no it is a modified (two engines) gearbox made by Tamiya for the old Gepard.
I think it is not strong enough so I have to build a gearbox by myself.

I am collecting old gearboxes like the tamiya or for example made by Maier.
If somebody has one, contact me please.

Regards
Oliver

Hi dukw
What plans did you use to create your model? I am currently involved in a project to create a 3D CAD of a Mk IV Female tank, is there a chance you could share your plans that you used with me?

I took everything from the Mark IV Lodestar in Brüssel.

Kind Regards
