I'd like to build some European railway gun trains that actually run on a model railway. Is anybody making kits that match either OO (1/76) or HO (1/87) guage ? Kits made to 1/72 would appear close enough to OO but the track size of OO is not to an accurate scale... P4 (1/76) is closer to accurate.
Or do the dedicated enthusiasts actually handcraft their running gun trains from scratch ? thanks Rod

Rod, this won't be much help, but might be some, er, hope!
One of these days I'm going to make a train load of tanks on their way to Cambrai. As I started to get the bits together, years ago, I saw a little set of wheels that converts 1/72 kits to run on OO guage track. I didn't buy it and now wish I had, and can't remember much about it, except that it exists.

I can also remember. But I think I also remember, that I have heard about it - 1 year ago -they are still available. But I can't remember the factory name.
Railways the scale used by UK modellers is 4mm =1foot yes it's sounds odd but so are most Railway modelers (me included) this equates to 1/76 scale. If you are contemplating modelling anything to do with railways then I would opt for this the amount of stuff available is vast from track wheels wagons loco's etc. Hope this helps
So you guys recommend building the 1/72 kit but modify the bogies to run on OO track then ? The scale of 1/72 would make it 5% bigger than it should be, compared to the standard OO engines (1/76) I would use, but I don't think that would be too visually obvious. Perhaps a bigger problem is that OO scale trains actually use HO scale track, i.e. 1/87 scale, which means the 1/72 scale model would be running on 1/87 scale track, which could look silly... Why doesn't the modelling world agree on standard scales ?!!#@

I appreciate how frustrated you feel, Rod. The reason is probably as Baldwin says, people just don't want to agree and conform. But one can't help feeling that 'they' are just bloody minded about being contrary.
The Airfix Tank Mark I was sold as HO/OO scale and now it is sold as 1:72. It is the same gazillion year old kit. So, according to Airfix, it is simultaneously 1:87, 1:76 and 1:72 scale. Quite a remarkable kit! Curiously, a female version of the kit will be released (by and by) and Airfix list it as 1:76 (while the male is still listed as 1:72).
Anyways, back to your point. If you just converted the bogies (wheels?) of your 1:72 kit they may look odd to the well-trained eye. But I doubt most people would notice; they'd be amazed by a mammoth artillery piece moving around a model train set! I certainly would be. Another point to consider is; are there any 1:76 railway gun kits, or are they all 1:72?
