Thinking that I would like to try some more colourful painting (and using Ironsides' excellent advice and tips), I have been considering the Russian Civil War. I have converted a HaT Russian Infantryman into a figure on horseback, and intend to paint him up as a White. I am painting a couple of HaT's Renault FT tanks. And I am making up Emhar's Mark A Whippet into 'Sphinx' using Emhar's decals. I have some of Black Lions Decals. I have found some good colour plates for uniforms (couple attached), but not much for the tanks.
For the tanks' colours/markings I have 3 Osprey books; The Renault FT, White Armoured Forces, and Red Armoured Forces. There are two old Armada books that I am hoping Santa will bring; #1 Russia's First Tanks, and #14 Tanks of The Civil War.
My list of tanks that I think I could use is:
1. HaT or RPM or Matchbox Renault FT 2. Emhar Whippet Medium Mark A 3. Matador Whippet Medium Mark B 4. McCullough's paper Tank Mark V
But I don't know how many of each were used together. Actually I know diddly about tank on tank action in the RCW. Any suggestions? (Also interested in the other conflicts happening in that area in that time)

Gentlemen, thank you. This is very helpful indeed.
Chris, I too was taken by the bright red pixie suit, and thought it would make a great Halloween costume! I also think that if I painted some figures like that, nobody would believe they had any historical basis.
From the sources that James and Ironsides link to, I made the following little list:
These numbers, types, dates and locations seem fairly definite:
10x American M1917 (6-ton) in Vladivostok, March 1920.
2x British Medium Mark B in Archangel, May or August 1919. (Was only 1 left behind when the British evacuated?)
4x British Mark V in Archangel, May or August 1919.
6x British Medium Mark A in Novorossisk, March or April 1919.
6x British Mark V in Novorossisk, March or April 1919.
20x French Renault FT in Odessa, December 1918. At the end of the source given by Ironsides there are two confusing statements: By October (according to Holman) the British had sent 13 Whippet (Medium A) and 31 Mk V tanks to Denikin. However, only 20 had been issued to the Russians by this time, and
According to Russian sources, British tanks arrived in South Russia on the following dates: March 22, 1919....12 tanks July 24, 1919 ....16 tanks Sept.6, 1919.........10 tanks Oct. 10, 1919........33 tanks Oct. 13, 1919........2 tanks
(I added the italicized text in brackets)
Can anyone add any more to this? Clarify or disprove any statements? Argue or discuss the numbers up or down?
