1/25 MkI Battle of Arras
Permalink

This project started on a site called the "LEM" or "Leage of Extraordinary Modelers".  The extraordinary thing is that all modelers of all ability levels are welcome.  So, this was a group build entitled 100% Scratch Built.
I decided on a MkI Male from around the time of the Battle of Arras, so I didn't have to model that 'steering tail'... which I've never liked the look of.  The goal was a 1/24 scale model with a full interior.  Here is the progress on the model:

Photocopies of my drawings, reduced from 1/12 to 1/24 scale. served as patterns for the side and top plates. One nice thing about large scale is that thickness can be near to scale.

Work on the sides of the tank.

Resin track parts

Progress on the hull

Start of the interior.

"Box radiator" as best I could figure it out from info at the time.

Sponsons.... a pain in the butt to make.

Painting. ^

Next, engine / drivetrain.

Relocating that pesky top hatch:

Finished model, but not yet ground work:

That's the work to date.

Cheers!

Ron

Congratulations on an outstanding model !
The model itself is inspirational, but to include an interior also....WOW.
Can't wait to see the next project.
Regards.

Thanks All!

It's not perfect, but I'm satisfied with it. The next one will be on the way in the 2011 time frame. Drawings will have to be made this year from existing drawings and photos. Little Willie will be next.

Cheers!

Ron

G'day Ron.
If I may be so bold, where did you obtain the 1/12th drawings of the interior from ?
If you have scans, can you post them here for everyone (I'm pretty sure that there would be one or two people interested !)
I would love to get a copy (and more than happy to pay for them if you can't post them here !)
Again, an excellent model. Looking forward to Little Willy !
Regards,
David Scorer

Thanks again all!

David,

I found a cross section similar to the one in the link below:

http://www.fairmile.fsbusiness.co.uk/imagestank/tankdrawing.jpg

From this I interpolated measurements and such for side and plan views. I did my drawings in 1" = 1'-0" scale so quite a bit of it was using known measurements and translating them into the drawings. The cross section above was handy for the side armor and parts of the top armor as well.

Most of the interior was referenced from photogrpahs on this site and what ever I could find on the web and David Fletcher's book. He was also kind enough to send some drawings / photos of details when he could. So you can see that this model wouldn't stand up to rivet counters (since I didn't have an original vehicle to measure), but still looks okay when taken in as a whole.

In short, I'd go with Helen's drawings and wait for her to complete some of the interior.  My drawings of the interior might look good at first glance, but won't stand up to the prototype I'm sure. smile  confuse

cheers!

Ron

A bit off topic, wrong scale, wrong war, wrong country.

Modelling on the grand scale! Maybe the IWM will have a Cambrai diorama built for 2016?   I wonder if this model still exists?

The other projects are worth a look.

Hi Ron, wonderful job you've done there.

Let's hope that someone from Airfix sees this Topic and thinks.....   'I have an idea! why don't we build a MarkI, with interior detail,  in 1/24th scale ready for the centenary of the birth of the Tank'
