Mk IV unditching rails
Permalink

I am currently making an Emhar Mk IV Male tank and I was wanting to know if the rails are correct in profile? I know they are placed on the model with the inside of the rail facing out instead of in and the ends that connect to the horns needs to be modified.I have seen the walk around photos and in profile they seem to be correct but still need to be worked on. I do not intend to build a 100% correct model but I would like to address issues that don't look right and try to improve a decent model. Thanks for your thoughts.

If you want to correct them, get some styrene, or better yet brass, 'angle iron' and replace the kit rails.

plastic fan, if you simply swap them over (put the left one on the right and vice versa) they do seem to have the correct profile.

But the bends are in the wrong place, and the rear end is really quite wrong. Depends how far you want to go with it. I s'pose if you can live with the bad sponsons then you can live with odd-looking unditching rails.

If you read the old article on Internet Modeler, Glen Porter goes into detail about how he fixed the unditching rails:
http://hsfeatures.com/mkivmalegp_1.htm

(but don't do what he did with the petrol tank)

Thank you all very much. I have a drawing in the Wydawnictwo Militaria book British Tanks 1914-1918 but after looking at some photos I am starting to wonder if the drawings are all that accurate. I have made a template using the drawings and it seems pretty close but I count 4 bends in the profile and on the real thing I count 3.Anyway thank you all for the help and the pictures so it is back to the bench.

Hello John, this is the way I did my tanks, not 100% accurate, but better than the Emhar-version.

Greetings,Hans.

Hi Hans, your Mk IV looks great! I just got the Osprey book on German Panzers 1914 to 1918 and it shows some good shots of Beutepanzer Mk IV The pictures show the rails pretty clearly so it helps a lot. I think the diorama you did on Cambrai is excellent and the Mk IVs are superb. Thanks for the photos and the advice.

Definitely need to get up to Lincoln at some point - for starters it's only an hour or so up the road from me! Is it the 'actual' Flirt II or another (ie training tank) marked up as it?

Thank Chris for the photos, they help quite a bit. I have read all the post on this thread and viewed the terrific photos and I cannot tell you how much you have all helped. I have learned that while the rails were pretty much of one design on the Mk IV, there mounting could be types of mounting gear. Using the walk arounds on the site and various photos I feel I have a good understanding of how the were made and attached.
