There's also 'Digging up Plugstreet'. There was a tv programme called 'Finding the fallen' which you could get on DVD as well, if it's of interest
'Digging up Plugstreet' looks interesting. Thank you!
The 'Finding the fallen' DVDs I´ve got already (2 DVD from Discovery Channel, or is there another?)
There are also some very interesting documentarys about mining warfare and archeology by the Durand Group on Fougasse Films, each wit a lot of multimedia extras on DVD!
I´m primarily looking for books (best english, or german - poorly I can´t speak or read any word of french )
Yes, "L'archéologie de la Grande Guerre" is only in french. The book (softcover) has got 127 pages and measures 26 x 19cm. The price is Euro 15,90. I think this is a fair price.
I have not yet read the whole text but so far it's an interesting reading. There are many colour pictures of actual excavations and b/w Great War photographs. I would suggest that the captions are easy to understand.
Battlefield Archeology, by John Laffin (1987). It was published Hippocrene Books in New York and Ian Allen Ltd in Great Britain. It is 128 pages and is illustrated with black & white photos and a few maps.
The chapter headings are:
1. Digging Up a War
2. The Inspiration
3. The Western Front
4. Knowing Where to Dig
5. Evidence of Battle
6. Battlefield Archeology in Practice
7. Natural-State Battlefields
8. Information for Novice Archeologists
The focus seems to be obtaining artifacts for small museums and using amateur archeological digs to better understand the role of the individual soldiers who took part in the great battles.
I think it is out of print. I picked up my copy at a used book store. There appear to be some copies availible online here (I have no ties with the sellers):
Wolhodden, have you updated your archaeology list since posting this question. Although Laffin has written a number of military history books, the archaeology, especially 'Digging up the diggers,' is used to demonstrate how not to do archaeology. The Fromelles book is excellent and the benchmark of the archaeology for western front/ human remains.
