I believe she should be in whatever shade of grey the Royal Navy were using at the time. However, apparently there was no standardisation between paint manufacturers so "Battleship Grey" from Arkwrights of York could be different to "Battleship Grey" from Harris of Hackney Wick. Ie, there is room for artistic interpretation.
Some photos appear to show her with a white-painted belly. And I can't recall if she had a stripe painted on her for the engine & transmission trials.
You could also paint Mother in the Solomon scheme. There is one photo I know of that shows it relatively clearly. Rhomboid did a build of it with this scheme being applied and the photos should be on the forum somewhere.
PDA, your memory does not fail you; she did indeed have the stripe for the engine trials.
