Vickers MG Mk I Paint
Permalink

Not really a tank subject but certainly an era one.
I am in the process of attempting to reproduce a Vickers MkI MG 1916/1918 era on a MK IV Tripod.
It will be approximately 9 1/2 inches long from muzzle to handgrips.
No moving parts, just a desktop model cast in pewter.

My dilemma is I cannot find out what paint colour to use.
There are quite a few sites that cover this weapon but my emails for requests for info on this weapon go unanswered.

Olive Drab has been used I know in the Canadian Army, but tell that to anyone nowadays in a paint store here.
And I am not even sure if Olive Drab was a Canadian color, or originally British.

I suppose I could just leave it in the natural pewter and allow the patina to age. But I do think it would look nicer if it carried the colors of the day.

Certainly could use some good advise, help and guidance.

Also , I can't quite figure out how to post a picture, otherwise I would give you a preview on my progress. If there is an interest in such.

Thanks in advance. All the best.

Marty

Hope this is of some use to you, and if you look in "On the Forum" there is a topic on attaching photo's. The colour would be field drab, a greenish brown.

Agree with Paul.

Various colour schemes for comparison might be seen at http://www.vickersmachinegun.org.uk/.

There's also early British colour pictures at http://www.diggerhistory.info/images/weapons-ww1-allied/vickers08.jpg.

Thank you for the quick response.
Have been to both forums, and the pictures and info I have.
I was fortunate enough to have been given a manual from a friend written by one Ian Skennerton, which gives me much needed info on the exploded views of the wpn.

I do suppose there may have been many shades of color used, as many were making the gun.

Perhaps I was hoping that someone had a magic bullet for me in mixing patinas to get a close shade.
I certainly appreciate the assistance, and thank you for taking the time to respond.

I totally missed the attachment file instructions -- thx.

Here is a near finished Vickers MK1.
This is not to detail nor is it finished.
Scale, as I am not sure how that is calculated is ruffly guessed at 1/48 th (???)
Length from barrel jacket flash/blast eliminator to handgrips -- 8 1/2 inches.

(My first shot at getting a picture on your forum, so anything may, or may not happen or be the right size.)
Again, this is no where near the scale that it portrayed here on the forum, but I thought it may be of interest to some.
The gun is made up of solid pewter (tho the barrel jacket is hollow) and will weight in close to two pounds when done.
The flimsie, is of MDF with pewter ends epoxyd on.
Paint, is as close as I could find that was advisedin the above posts.
(The email I sent to the forum admin on getting a pic posted, please disregard.)
