There is an explanation of the 4mm:foot scale in this article:

http://www.landships.info/landships/kit_reviews.html?load=kit_reviews/W^D_WW1_British_Tankers.html

And a different explanation of 1/72 and 1/76 scales here:

This may muddy the water a bit but I've been doing some arithmetic.

12 x 25.4 = 304.8mm

304.8 / 4 = 76.2, Therefore 4mm/ft = 1/76.2 scale

And with a bit more arithmeticing here is a comparison of 1/76 and 1/72 when applied to WW1 figures. I know different nations have different averages but these are the ones I've picked.

Ive seen average height quoted between 5ft 5inches and 5ft 7 inches (1.65mtr to 1.7mtr)

Therefore in 4mm scale a figures should average between 21.7/22.4mm.

Officers? 5ft 10inches (1.778mtr) = 23.4mm in 1/76

1/72 figures should average between 22.9/23.6mm

Officers? 5ft 10inches (1.778mtr) = 24.7mm in 1/72

British Troops had to be 5ft 8inches or more at the start of the war, unfortunately due to losses the official height eventually went down to 5ft 5inches (Bantams).
Is this right?
