Ha, I remember as a boy, after the kissing everyone sang the ships off with the "Maori Farewell" ("Now is the hour") - this was early 1950s but apparently it started with the NZ troopships in WW1 - "Po atarau" being the Maori version.

Yes indeed, fairly small numbers but then the total population of NZ was quite low too. I think there were maybe some hard feelings over the Maori wars (1845 to 1872) which were still within living memory at that time but I guess most Maori regarded those as more or less honourably concluded.
'Wooden Heart' that was, having only a few original lines of the song in it. I think The King even sang 'mein schat' instead of schatz but who cares. I guess Elvis the Pelvis came in by plane (a Stratocruiser, Constellation may be?) and not by a troopship. Happy cold war days! As we're happily veering off the topic, it began with kissing remember? a picture of an US troopship and one of the landing in France, again with music.
