They are interesting photos but Chinese Whippets?  I think they are Japanese.

The second photo shows the drivers face plate modified to open, hinged at the top.

I think it's the old gotcha - Japanese Kanji script is Japanese written using Chinese characters. AFAIK only the Japanese bought Whippets.
