Slightly remembered this series and by searching at Youtube found the episode "Tanks" with a running Mark IV "Excellent" (Bovington?) crewed by reenactors and other interview snippets with WWI british tankers.
Enjoy the footage as, sadly, this vehicle can no longer be run as the steel structure is showing signs of metal embrittlement/fatigue and the vehicle could literally shake itself to pieces.
The tank museum has started, in conjunction with a number of universities , research programmes into the longterm preservation of AFVs. The result of which may well be that a very conservative approach is adopted to running pre 1950's vehicles in the collection. I would advise anyone who wants to see the Tiger and Pz3 as well as the Matilda 1, Sherman etc, running, to attend the major events at Bovington over the next couple of years.
Already wondered about a running Mark IV. Only heard of the Mark V at Bovington so far. As it is nice to see such machines running, it is indeed better to preserve them as good as possible. I really concider visiting Bovington ASAP.
Once I went to the german tank museum in Munster (Panzermuseum Munster) with friend, not only to see the replika A7V but was surprised that they had something like an "open tank day" and saw a ladder next to the Panzer III and IV. In a few moments we where sitting in them and rotated turrets, opened periscopes and squeezed around inside. Was a nice experience, but I wonder how long these exhibits can stand a 1000 equally interested visitors and remain in running condition?
