Your right on the number, it was 170. I've searched through some conversion tables I have but they dont give that one.

This fabulous interactive conversion chart says the next colours to Humbrol 170 are Valleyo 871 or 887 and Revell Aqua 36146.
This list worked out fine for me in the past.

It will probably never match exactly though.

Brown Bess was an incredibly useful colour for shading (clothing, flesh etc) because it was the perfect organic shade for natural fibres and skin. Also, unlike the mediocre "Chocolate brown", it never dried with a bloody annoying salty "tide mark", that brushes off only partially.

In fact, whilst I'm on, I'm finding that a fair number of Humbrol's paints do this. Once they've been thinned to a useful consistency, they can dry with a (really, f....ing irritating) white powdery finish. Is there something happening in the manufacturing process? I wonder about changing to a different medium, but can't get on with acrylics as they dry too quickly for blending (I paint mostly figures), and using oils seems like starting again from scratch. And lets not mention the so-called (enamel) "WW1 blue" - which is DREADFUL. Don't go anywhere near it.

There: rant over. I'll go back to painting my Austrian artillery officer.
