A Company, HSMGC Mark I
Permalink

I'm looking for suitable tanks to model, from A Company of the Heavy Section Machine Gun Corps, or whatever they were called by the time A Company saw action. And there's the big gap in my knowledge! I don't know much about A and B Companies, for example, I don't know when they first saw action, or where.

I have an old broken model of a Mark I female that I made some years ago, and I want to repair the model and add some decals. As I said in another thread, ideally I'd like a tank with a cool name! And preferably one that supported a London, New Zealand, or Canadian Infantry Regiment in an attack.

I have decals for these names (I can live with the exact size and spacing not being accurate) beginning with "A":

Ajax, Apollo, Angel, and Attilla.

I'm quite tempted by "Angel".

Any suggestions, or information, would be most welcome.

Two tanks belonging to "A" Company were destroyed by shellfire on 23/10/16 while laying up on the Albert-Bapaume Road near the Pozieres Windmill. This would have been a couple of miles behind the frontline on this date. As far as I am aware, this is the earliest mention of "A" Company in action. There are photos of these vehicles being broken up by German prisoners after the Armistice.

Trevor Pidgeon in "Tanks on the Somme" made reference to a male tank, belonging to "A" Company named "Ariadne". This was supposedly destroyed while supporting the 4th Cdn. Div. near the East Miraumont Road on 18/11/16. The documentation for this is, however, rather sketchy.

The only "A" Company tank names of which I am certain are "We're All In It" (A13) and "Oh I Say" (A17), both females. Both are names of contemporary musical shows. A13 was ditched at St. Pierre Divion on 13/11/16 while in support of the 39th Div. Pidgeon disputed whether A13 actually bore this name, but on balance of evidence, I think he was wrong. Clearly, the practice of giving tanks names whose first letter corresponded to that of their battalion did not solidify until after the Battle of Arras. For instance, in that battle some of the tanks were named after ships (Iron Duke, Lusitania).

The practice of naming tanks after the battalion letter wasn't introduced until well after Arras. In fact just before third Ypres.

Thank you, Gwyn and Rhomboid.

I am aware that not all tanks had names beginning with the Company letter, but I thought that as many might, as might not. So I just thought there might be some beginning with "A" in addition to the odd ones.

I'm thinking of using "Angel" and "Why Worry", and I probably will, but it would give me a warm fuzzy feeling if there was any historical basis for a particular name (or a definite reason to not use a particular name).
