Inside of a MkI - MkIII

Hi to Everyone,

I'm building a MKI in 1/8 scale -  scratch built models, nothing new there, but what I need are pictures of the inside. i.e. engine and mounts, gearbox and of course differntial. ammunition racks, panels ect, I have lots of photos of wrecked tanks that show some of the detail and the MKIV walkround photos on this site are excelent. Living in Germany its a bit difficult to view a real MKI

Can anyone help.

Just noticed this... sorry!no

Hmmm... awkward one, I've done plans for the outside of the MK1 Tank, but not the innards. There was a fantastic model that included internals, but I just noticed the photos have gone. MK1 Model There is though still some good info there, and it may be worth emailing him.

If I find anything I will post it here.

Thanks for that, I'll try. The more I dig into this the more hooked I'm getting. Been noticing lots of differences between the various Marks (I - III) as well and I don't mean like rivet spacing, position and shape of hatches etc. No one has mentioned that 'Mother' had an extra road wheel or have they and I missed it? Or the vent openings for the radiator.

Anyway won't go on too long, got some more photos to check out.

Yep it's addictive researching these early machines. 

Not sure about the extra road wheelconfuse but now you've mentioned it I am going to have a look.

Only thing I will say when doing ANY research... when ever possible go back to source! By that I mean dated photos or info with a good provenance.

So often an honest mistake can be made... and then used and reused, until it becomes fact.

One observation with Mother I would make, is that she was used as a test bed. That means you have to be very careful of 'when' in her tragically short life any photos have been taken.

I am VERY tempted to use my MK1 plans to make a set of Mother... damn! more work!no

There are some photos of the inside of the Mark II at Bovington on Landships II, here. But be careful, as Helen says, this tank has been mucked about a lot in its lifetime.

Graham Matthew's build of the Airfix 1/76 kit, with a detailed interior, contains some useful stuff. It is here.

How on earth have I not noticed the extra front roller on Mother!confuse Oh God I sooo want to do a set a plans for Her.... kill me now!!

Thanks for taking notice it's nice to know I'm not a lone voice.

(I thought I could see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it was just members of this forum, with torches, comming the other way!!)

I know this is crazy but part of the plan is to build the frames with removable plates so that the final drive chain and sprockets are visable,and I have a few ideas about the differential and gears ( would be nice to have them working and that is part of the plan)

I'm having to use old photos and guess where the cross members and frames are using the rivet lines as guides (sort of!) they do seem to move about.

Your comment on various uses of Mother and other Mks has now thrown some light onto why various photos differ, and not just because they are from different angles

If I ever get to building I will certainly post pictures. If I don't well I can always post my drawings and sketches

Glad the site is coming to your aid... good lot on here, helped me a lot with my own set of plans.

Found a few pics that might give you a better idea of how the Tanks were built. The first pic is of a MK4, but is the best one I know of as it even has the rollers in place.

The other is a MK1 wreck... always look for the round hatch if possible.

Oh and you're quite right about the rivets... they vary in spacing and alignment. I learnt that one early on when I tried to work out dimensions by the number of rivets.no
