Hello,

for my new dio I'm planning to build a Thornycroft J Typ 3 ton lorry in scale 1/72. In the past I searched and collected plans and informations in books and in the WWW. Some drawing plans are bought. Now I have a little problem. As you can see in the picture below,I have scale drawings of the 3 ton lorry. For beeing sure I take for reference the measurement of the front and back wheel of a data sheet which I found here (source     http://www3.hants.gov.uk/typejchassisdiagram.pdf)

In the picture below you can see scale drawings of the lorry, I mean. The two drawings above are 1/72,scaled up/down until I get the correct diameter for the front wheel, for example (12 mm).As you can see now the wheelbase of the two upper drawings are different, the middle drawing is shorter. The 3rd bottom drawing is in scale 1/76 but when I measured the wheel diameters, they are to big.Otherwise the wheelbase is correct,as I measured and compared with the data sheet above. Is it possible, that the length of the 3 ton chassis can be different?I am now totally confused, about the wright drawing.Which drawing can I take for reference? Thanks for reading and perhaps for your help.

Kindly regards

Michel

I don't know so much about Thornycroft, but while studying some other cars and lorries I have found that they have been built with many different chassis lengths. I can easily assume that the thing has been same in this case.

This article says that longer chassis was added on the manufacturing program in 1919 for using it in buses etc. The data sheet mentions even three different wheel bases 4153 mm, 4381 mm and 4724 mm, two longer been used in passenger lorries, so buses.

While comparing the drawings to this photo, smaller size wheels seem to be more accurate.

I would choose the drawing in the middle for base of building WW I Thornycroft Type J, to be sure. But I can't say that the others are wrong...

Hello fellows,

@ Lincoln Tanker: thank's for sending the Link

@ MTorrent: thanks for you comment. I know that the upper drawing is correct, but I also prefer the drawing in the middle,as I saw on historical Photos that the wooden construction in the back is a little higher and the bonnet for the engine differences also a little bit.

@ baldwin: wow, a real nice modell you made.It is a pity that you made it in scale 1/76 otherwise I could spent a lot of work.

Cheers

Michel
