1/35th CA1. Commanders Series Kit
Permalink

Just a couple of in-progress shots of my latest project (well, of one project) It's the Commanders Series kit, I'm building it as a late version with the relocated fuel cell's mounted externally at the rear. The kit is reasonably accurate against various plans I have, however it's a little rough in some areas, but, considering it's price and the unique subject matter I'm prepared to accept it's faults and simply build it. Construction to this stage was relatively trouble free, once you sort out the suspension it goes together quite quickly. I've heard that the Commanders Series kits suffer from over simplified suspension units, this kit isn't one of those, what is supplied is quite accurate and detailed, there isn't too much more that you could add as is out of the box. However, The tracks could use some work, but with judicious use of "mud" they can be made to look respectable. There's still alot of putty work and general construction clean up to do yet before its ready for paint I've also got the smaller detail work to add using the photo-etch supplied once the rough handling is out of the way, then the painting can start. Any feedback or comments are most welcome as it isnt too late to change the model at this point. Thanks for looking.

Regards,

David Scorer

Never heard of that company ! Are they doing 72nd scale as well ? That looks quite good ,but judging from the different colors of the parts you added quite a lot to the kit,or is it moulded in 2 colors ? Mathias

Somewhere I've got an article by Steve Zaloga on building this model. Can't promise to find it immediately, but would you like me to have a go?

G'day Mat,

http://ironshipwrights.com/armor/armor.html

Here's the link to the company that made it, I have no connection to them aside from being a happy customer...alas there doesn't look to be any product in any other scales.... There wasn't much that I added, just a couple of add on armour plates, the different colour you see is all original castings, perhaps they ran out of one type of resin or poured it over a couple of days?

David Scorer

G'day James,

Yes please, I'd quite like to see that article if you could find it, I'd be happy to pay for photocopies and postage.. or you could send it via email. I know he did a work up and article on the old Commanders Series St Chamond kit, but somehow I missed the build he did of their CA1...

Thank you very much.
Regards.

G'day Lancer,

Yeah, I could have done a few more things to it, but as this build was simply going to be Out Of The Box, I didn't let that distract me. I'd still like to build another one, but this time as the early version with the internal fuel tanks and no add on armour, so perhaps then I'd go allout and detail it up a little more????

Regards,
David Scorer

Can't find the article in Mil Mod at present. Found the Saint-Chamond one but not the Schneider. I do remember SZ recommended drilling out the cavity under the radiator grille, and wearing a facemask while doing so.

Will keep looking.

Just of interest, Panzer shop do 2 complete kits, one with and one without armour plates round about the 130 USD mark.

G'day again Lancer,

I am loath to express this opinion, and please, it is just my thoughts & opinion, I haven't held one, but after comparing the parts images on the "net" I've come to the conclusion that the Panzershop CA1 looks suspiciously like a copy of the Commanders Series kit, not all of it mind you, there are a few components that are new, the suspension is in photoetch whereas the Commanders is resin, but the bulk of the kit is dubious, a friend purchased the Panzershop Mk.I only to find that it was a copy (complete with original manufactures logo on the inside of the castings).... there was a modicum of new parts and yes there was the tail etc, but the bulk of the kit was a copy of the injection moulded Mk.IV kit.. This I have seen in the flesh and can comment, as for the CA1..

Ceveat emptor

Regards,

David Scorer
